Students Attend Social Justice Leadership Conferences

Conferences Hosted at Fieldston
On March 12, a group of students attended two social justice leadership conferences for young men hosted collaboratively on Fieldston's campus. Thirteen students attended the “(Re)defining Power: Exploring the White Male Voice in Diversity Work” conference, while another thirteen students attended the "I Am Present!” Young Men of Color Symposium. Spanning grades 6-12, the Friends cohort was chaperoned by teachers Nadim Bawalsa, David Bell, Benjie Messinger-Barnes, and Warren Salandy, and parent Steven Gil. The Friends group was organized by Jason Craige Harris, Director of Diversity & Inclusion.

The conferences hosted joint sessions for breakfast, lunch, and the opening plenary. Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely, authors of the award-winning "All American Boys" novel on police brutality and race, addressed the attendees in the opening session. After their talk, students and adults moved into their separate conferences, each of which was fully stocked with workshops on privilege, power, and identity. Bringing together over 300 students from across New York City, both conferences focused on the unique needs and experiences of its primary audience, aiming ultimately to cultivate a new generation of mindful and informed social justice leaders.
