Four Friends Educators Honors

Teachers Lisa Ammirati, Dot Cates, Ariel Kitch, and Jennifer Melaragno, were recently inducted as 2015-2016 Fellows of The Academy for Teachers.

The Academy brings New York’s finest teachers together for Master Classes led by preeminent intellectuals and artists. Only 18 teachers are chosen for each Master Class, which also provide a rare opportunity for private and public school teachers to work together.

In each Master Class, the Fellows spent the morning learning from a preeminent expert and the afternoon sharing strategies and resources with their colleagues. Ms. Kitch took part in “Computing Fundamentals” led by computer legend Brian Kernighan, who now teaches at Princeton University. Ms. Melaragno was invited to “An Introduction to the Mathematical Theory of Knots and Links” with Sylvain Cappell of NYU’s Courant Institute for Mathematical Sciences. Ms. Cates’s Master Class was “The Lifelong Advantage of Curiosity” with master historian David McCullough, who has won two Pulitzer Prizes, two National Book Awards, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. And Lisa Ammirati attended “A Carbon Atom’s Journey” with Dr. Christian Rojas of Barnard College.

Six Friends teachers were honored by the Academy earlier this school year.
