Taking a Stand in History

Fouad '18 Wins NY State, Headed to Nationals
Fouad ’18 is headed to Maryland on June 11 for the National Contest for National History Day after earning first place at the competition’s state level event held in Cooperstown, NY. He will now perform his act, Sic Semper Tyrannis: John Wilkes Booth’s Justification for Assassinating Lincoln, at the University of Maryland, College Park during a week-long event that includes finalists from all fifty United States, Washington, D.C., Guam, American Samoa, Puerto Rico, and international schools in China, Korea, South Asia, and Central America.

In March, 26 Friends students competed in the city-wide round of the 2017 National History Day competition held at the Museum of the City of New York on March 5. Fouad, Jack '18, Sabrina ’18 and Bookie ’18 placed in the top ranks among all New York City students. Along with Fouad, Jack continued on to the state level, where he placed third in the Individual Documentary category. He will now serve as an alternate for the National event in that category.

National History Day is a highly regarded academic program in which students conduct historical research on topics of interest with respect to a theme and then create a performance, a website, a documentary film, an exhibit or an essay. Their work is then entered into competitions in the spring at local and state levels and evaluated by professional historians and educators. The program culminates in a national competition each June at the University of Maryland. More than 30,000 teachers and more than half a million middle and high school students participate annually.

This year's theme was “Taking a Stand in History.” To view the four Friends winning projects, visit the links below. To learn more about National History Day, visit www.nhd.org.
