Persuasive Presentations

Students Vie for Grants for Issues They Care About
On April 19, 2017, Grade 9 history students concluded their Youth Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) service learning projects by delivering formal presentations to a panel of judges about a nonprofit organization they chose to represent. The winning team of Miranda, Megan, Kiran and Jamie presented on the Association to Benefit Children and earned a $5,000 grant for the Association.

A secondary grant of $1,000 from Friends Seminary was awarded to Edible Schoolyard thanks to the presentation by Sofia, Julia, Cordelia and Georgia. A third grant of $750 from the Parents Association was awarded to Safe Horizon thanks to the presentation by Amnon, Anabela, Claire and Sofia.

The first place $5,000 grant, funded by the Toskan Casale Foundation, aims to raise awareness of charitable organizations and social issues. Under the YPI program, teams of students research social problems in the community and create persuasive presentations about a charity they believe is well positioned to tackle the issues they care about.

Through Friends Seminary’s partnership with YPI over the last six years, students have connected to more than 50 NYC nonprofits and their clients and have been able to award more than $30K in grants to winning organizations.
