First Cohort of the Global Competencies Certificate Program Wraps Up!

This summer, faculty, and staff participating in Friends Seminary’s Global Competencies Certificate Program (GCCP) finished up their professional development with a domestic immersion experience in the lowcountry of Georgia with Nobis Project facilitators. Interactions with the Gullah Geechee on Edisto Island, Nobis Global Action Model workshops, and a service learning collaboration with Savannah historical museums provided the faculty with hands-on experiences in creating culturally responsive, and globally relevant educational opportunities.

These summer experiences were part of a two-year initiative that was created in response to the school’s strategic plan focus on global education. The plan outlines a key objective to build a cohort of globally competent educators by supporting faculty in relevant professional development opportunities that build their capacities to teach global competencies. To reach that objective, Friends launched the GCCP, a blended online learning professional development certificate program that spans two academic years with synchronous and asynchronous coursework, followed by summer capstone domestic and international (Colombia) immersion experiences.

“These immersion experiences serve as capstones to the readings, discussions, and workshops held during the school year and are integral to fostering world-minded educators—who are able to develop internationally-minded curriculum, and immersive approaches for learning in and beyond the classroom,” shares Leitzel Schoen, Dean of Co-Curricular Programs. “The School recognizes that in order to succeed in a global economy and make a positive difference in an interconnected world, our students need to be educated beyond our borders. In order to achieve Friends Seminary’s aim to provide students with skills of cross-cultural cognition—the ability to think, feel, and act across culture— the establishment of this professional development program is an important first step.”

The 2015-2017 GCCP cohort included: Elizabeth Grossi, Christen Marchilena, Craig Saslow, John Evans, Jesse Pasca, Deanna Yurchuk, Dot Cates, Kelly Grimmett, Lynn Lin, Constance Vidor, Leitzel Schoen, Elise McLean, and Susan Schwartz. This fall, the School will welcome the second cohort of faculty to the GCCP. Stay tuned for the announcement of participants.
