Student-designed Database Platform to Track Upper Schoolers Service

This fall, Friends will launch a new data management system to track Upper School students’ service experiences. Jediah Katz, ‘17, custom designed this platform as part of his Senior project last year. Motivated by the clunkiness of the school’s current platform and students’ desire to access their student records individually through password protected logins, Jediah met last fall with service learning staff to identify operational needs for a new data management system.

After many months spent in design this past year, Jediah was ready to present his project at the Senior presentations in June. His fellow classmates and Friends faculty and staff responded with cheers and applause. “Jediah’s work will have an incredible impact on his peers and will make our job of managing students’ fulfillment of their service graduation requirement a lot easier,” Claire shared. Leitzel added, “Even after he graduated, Jediah took time over the summer to assist the Friends Tech Department in getting the system online. He is the epitome of what it means to give back.”

Features the new database platform includes:
  • mobile-friendly access
  • quick login through student’s Google school account to record service experiences
  • capacity for students to directly view their personal hours and nonprofit organizations with whom they’ve volunteered across their US years
  • function allowing advisors to access their advisees’ records at a glance
  • tool for posting reflections on school service blog linked to site

Thank you Jediah! We wish you all the best at college this fall.
