Peace Week — Save the Date!

On the evening of February 8th, Friends is honored to host Peace Week speaker Sonia Nazario, an award-winning author and journalist who has written for more than two decades about some of our country’s most difficult social issues. As she puts it, “I’ve always focused on those not getting enough ink––women, children, the poor, Latinos.” Her most recent writings aim to shake people out of entrenched views on immigration—especially as it pertains to the Central American youth seeking refuge from violence in their countries.

Headlines and statistics simply do not capture what it is like to leave everything you know and love for the unknown, to venture out, leaving one land for another. But stories do. Through the eyes of one boy, Sonia’s book, Enrique’s Journey—based on the Los Angeles Times newspaper series that won two Pulitzer Prizes—turns the current immigration controversy from a political story into a personal one. As Sonia writes, “Amid all the noise, information, and rhetoric, and regardless of where one lies on the political spectrum, these children are still migrating. Their stories force us to challenge the narrative we’re fed, and find new solutions. These stories help us better understand our collective reality and ignite a fire for improving our communities and the world.”

Please mark your calendars for February 8th! Invite your friends and family to join us in the 15th Street Meetinghouse to hear Sonia share her experiences as an investigative reporter covering one of our world's greatest challenges.
