Mapping Progress

Judith’s After Owls Coding students recently embarked on a journey to become more engaged New Yorkers and global digital citizens through a series of mapping and data collection activities. They partnered with BetaNYC, an organization dedicated to improving lives through civic design, technology, and data.

Students engaged in a series of lessons developed by BetaNYC's Civic Innovation Fellowship Manager, Jazzy Smith. To introduce and reinforce mapping concepts, students devoted an afternoon to mapping a classroom at the School. The following week, they traveled across the street to Stuyvesant Park where they put their data collecting skills to work—counting benches, trash cans and picnic tables. Back in the classroom, they mapped many of these features and diligently analyzed data that is missing from OpenStreetMap's map of the area. They worked alongside Judith, Beta NYC’s Jazzy Smith and Dimitri Mimy and parent volunteers, to input it into OpenStreetMap. Zora ‘25 also helped mentor students throughout the project.

Exploring mapping, both by hand and with modern civic tools, was both a learning and a service opportunity that exemplifies the Friends experience.
