Friends Seminary will celebrate its 225th school year this September with the launch of several innovative programs—hallmark programs that continue to distinguish the downtown Quaker institution.

Following a successful trial year of a Scholar-in-Residence program last year that featured the instruction of renowned High Line architect Charles Renfro, Friends Seminary will welcome a new resident scholar,
Astrophycisist Neil deGrasse Tyson.

Additionally, the School will continue its offering of Arabic as a foreign language. In 2008, the School became the first in New York City to introduce the language into its curriculum. The program has been incredibly successful and has been closely followed and documented by The New York Times in several articles since its inception.

The School will also continue its week-long celebration and exploration of Peace, as well as its school-wide day of community service throughout the city. The basis of the School’s philosophy—a deeply held belief in the unique potential of each individual—has fostered academic and personal achievement among its students and instilled within them a strong sense of social responsibility.

From September to June, several events have been planned to honor the School’s 225 years of progress in diversity, community service, peacemaking, and innovation. The celebration will culminate on February 25, 2011 (2.25) with activities, exhibitions, and speakers.
For the 225th school year, a commemorative logo has been designed. The logo utilizes elements of the school’s most recent logo. The tree and color scheme have stayed the same, while the old school house has been replaced with a graphic representation of the 15th Street Meetinghouse—which celebrates its 150th anniversary this year. The new logo can be found on the school flags outside the School on 16th Street and outside the annex on 15th Street. The logos are also displayed on banners affixed to light poles along 16th Street from Union Square to Stuyvesant Square, and along 15th Street between Second and Third Avenues.

In celebration of the School's 225th anniversary, key words from our mission statement cut from vinyl are applied to the front curtain wall.
