Neil deGrasse Tyson is 2010-11 Visiting Scholar

Astrophysicist Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson, Director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History in New York and host of the PBS television show NOVA scienceNOW, is this year’s Visiting Scholar at Friends Seminary.

Dear Friends,

It gives me great pleasure to announce the appointment of astrophysicist Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson, Director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History in New York and host of the PBS television show NOVA scienceNOW, as this year’s Visiting Scholar at Friends Seminary.

This fall, Dr. Tyson will work with Middle and Upper School students through a series of chemistry, biology, physics, and general science lectures, including a special session with seniors on the college process and careers in science. On Monday evening, November 1, Tyson will deliver a lecture and host a book-signing in the Meetinghouse.

Tyson, who holds degrees from Harvard, the University of Texas and Columbia,  is author of numerous books, including The Pluto Files: The Rise and Fall of America's Favorite Planet and Death by Black Hole and other Cosmic Quandaries. In 2004, Tyson served on the President's Commission on Implementation of United States Space Exploration Policy. He was soon afterward awarded the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal.  Tyson has taught at numerous institutions, including Princeton and the University of Maryland. We are thrilled that Friends Seminary students will benefit from his deep passion for his field and his unique combination of scientific inquiry and joyful approach to discovery.

As you know, the Visiting Scholars Program was brilliantly launched last year with architect Charles Renfro of the firm Diller, Scofidio and Renfro.  In a year in which we focus on our math and science programs, including the launch of our very first on-line course (Science and the Origin of Knowledge), it is of significance that Dr. Tyson has accepted this appointment at Friends. We look forward to welcoming him.

All best,

Bo Lauder
Principal
