As part of this year’s Grade 9 Service Learning Project on Global Poverty and the Millennium Development goals, students partnered with the Kisyoro secondary school in Ruhiira, Uganda. Located in a remote section of Southwestern Uganda, the Kisyoro school is part of a “Millennium Village”—the Earth Institute/Millennium Promise initiative to eradicate extreme poverty.

In addition to writing research papers and presentations, ninth graders created VoiceThreads that introduced Friends to the Kisyoro students. Students in both schools exchanged blog comments in response to questions related to the eight Millennium Development Goals. These questions ranged from, “How does poverty affect the community in which you live?” to “Who has been an influential women in your life?” to “What environmental issue concerns you most? What are you doing about it?”

As a culminating activity, the ninth grade hosted a screening of the movie, Girl Rising, on Thursday, May 9 to raise funds for a scholarship that will enable a girl to attend the Kisyoro school. During a pre-movie panel, students emphasized the need to educate girls as a solution to global poverty and discussed how participation in the service-learning project had influenced their thinking.
