The United Nations selected Friends Seminary to co-sponsor its annual Student Conference on Human Rights. The three-day event will take place at UN Headquarters on December 16, 17 and 18. Other co-sponsors include the United Nations International School (UNIS), Interconnections 21, UNESCO-Canada, Global Education Motivators and Amnesty International

Friends students, Maghnus Mareneck '15, Amanda Shepherd '14 and Cindy Cochran '14, will represent the School on the UN Student Advisory Conference Committee. They join students from across the country and around the world in planning this program. An additional 21 students from the Upper School will also participate in the conference.

Prior to this week, all participants researched a human rights topic of their choice. On the first day of the conference, they will share their research informally with other students and meet with a panel of human rights experts. On the second day, they will work in small groups with students from other schools to develop a human rights campaign. The conference closes with presentations of these projects and constructive criticism from the panel of experts.

The main themes of the projects include:
  • Children’s Rights/Issues
  • Human Trafficking
  • Freedom of Speech/Expression and Access to Information
  • Punishment, Torture and the Death Penalty
  • Discrimination Based on Gender and Sexual Orientation
  • Sustainable Development
  • Girls/Women's Education
  • Rights of Marginalized People
