Day of Service 2014 | Students and Faculty Serve Throughout NYC

Grade 12 - Healthcare
Grade 12 students traveled to AFYA Foundation’s warehouse in Yonkers where they learned about the organization’s recent efforts in the Philippines, Africa and Haiti. Afterward, student volunteer groups helped sort recycled medical and humanitarian supplies that are donated by hospitals, nursing homes, corporations and individuals.

Grade 11 - Hunger
Grade 11 partnered with several hunger-alleviation organizations throughout New York City. With their advisories, students sorted food and served clients at the Food Bank for NYC: Shop & Stock, Food Bank for NYC: Repack in Hunts Point, New York Common Pantry, St. Johns Bread & Life and Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen. They ended the day with a screening of the documentary “A Place at the Table” and thoughtful discussion on hunger needs in the United States.

Grade 9 – Nonprofit Research
Over the past two months, Grade 9 researched local nonprofits and developed presentations advocating on behalf of the organizations. A panel of judges selected the winning team, and the Youth Philanthropy Initiative awarded a $5,000 grant to GEMS.

Grade 8 - Environment
Grade 8 students worked with the Long Island City Community Boat House. After learning about the organization’s work, they scrubbed kayaks and paddles in preparation for summer programs, worked on the dock and mulched newly planted trees around the park.

Grade 7 – Environment, Animal Welfare and Clean Air
Tom and Jason’s advisories worked on beautification projects with partner organization Paths to Pier 42.

Three Grade 7 advisories worked with Rational Animal to sew animal beds for local shelters.

Elizabeth's advisory participated in a Biking Campaign along the West Side Highway to advocate for Clean Air.

Aude and Penney’s advisories cleared invasive plant species with the Central Park Conservancy.

Grade 6 – Water
Grade 6 continued their focus on the global issue of access to clean, safe water by setting out for a 3-mile walk in Central Park. During the walk, students carried one-gallon containers filled with water to simulate the long trek children their age make every day in other regions of the world.

Grade 5 - Environment
Grade 5 toured the Lower East Side Ecology Center’s facilities to learn about their recycling and composting programs. After lunch, the students gardened portions of the East River Promenade.
