"We prepare students to engage in the world that is and to help bring about a world that ought to be."

Minute of Appreciation
Joseph Gosler
Business Manager Emeritus

For over 23 years, Joseph Gosler served the School as Business Manager. Additionally, he filled other roles concurrent with that position, including Principal Pro-temp for one month with Maria Fahey, while Rich Eldridge was on a leave of absence. He also served as Financial Aid Officer and Middle School baseball coach-for a team that always had a winning season.  During his time at Friends, Joe strived to respond to people on a consistent and timely basis. He was conscious of developing a sense of trust as a prerequisite for any institutional or personal development. He always focused support on what was best for students among competing priorities, and recognized the central importance of the faculty.  Among his many achievements during his time at Friends, Joe, modestly, only wanted a few mentioned. He developed a fund for depreciation, which allowed the School to have sufficient resources to fulfill small and major projects including the purchase of computers, renovations, and bond financing. He also developed a Financial Aid program with Harriet Burnett, which focused on supporting African-American male students entering the 9th Grade.  It's important to note that Joe managed the business office with less. In other words, in the first 15 years of his tenure, the business office was able to function effectively with a part-time purchasing agent, bookkeeper and business manager. As Friends Seminary became more successful, however, it became clear that more support for the School was needed and the business office grew in personnel accordingly under Joe's watchful eye.  Joe's colleagues surely remember his common catch phrase, "I'm making this up," uttered whenever he offered hypothetical solutions for the School. His sense of humor, coupled with his financial savvy, made him simultaneously a priceless asset to the school and a joy to work alongside.  I know I speak for Rich Eldridge and Joyce McCray as we express heartfelt gratitude for the breadth and depth of service Joseph has given to Friends Seminary and are proud to honor him as Business Manager Emeritus.
