"We prepare students to engage in the world that is and to help bring about a world that ought to be."

Ron Singer

Minute of Appreciation
Ron Singer
Teacher of English
Faculty Emeritus

His colleagues say that he returns to the English Department Office smiling ("beaming!" comes forth a clarification) after each class. Mr. Singer, a teacher who delights in his students; Ron Singer, a man who "digs" teaching.    For three decades, this joy in the reciprocal nature of teaching, entwined with a deep engagement with his colleagues, has made Ron an invaluable member of the Friends Seminary community. As member of many committees he has been an advocate for the rights of others: he worked to foster the School's commitment to multi-culturalism/diversity and to build its academic integrity program. He served as English Department chair and advisor to the student literary magazine. Through his teaching of writing (creative writing seminars in the Middle and Upper Schools and his senior fiction and essay writing courses), his commitment to bringing visiting authors into his classes, and through the sharing of insights gleaned from his own ongoing development as a writer - Ron nurtured what is indeed his true legacy to the School: the spiriting of a "community of writers."    Ron's oeuvre is broad, ranging from articles on human rights, to opera librettos, to poetry and personal essay; his work has been published in formats varying from magazines to e-books.  His book signing and reading from his chap book A voice for My Grandmother was particularly significant, serving as the opening event of the School's new Library in Fall, 2006. Ron is grateful to principals Rich Eldridge and Bo Lauder for accommodating his writing career, and to all the colleagues who have supported him as a writer and friend over the years.  We express heartfelt gratitude for the breadth and depth of service Ron has given to Friends Seminary and are proud to honor him as Faculty Emeritus.
