"We prepare students to engage in the world that is and to help bring about a world that ought to be."

Minute of Appreciation
Eva Stangel Dub
Teacher of Mathematics, 1969-1984

Faculty Emerita

Eva, who just celebrated her 94th birthday, brought the world of numbers to life for generations of Friends Seminary students. With skill and dignity she introduced her students to the foundations of mathematics - explaining with delight the relationships of angles in a isosceles triangle, of points on a plane; guiding apprehensive students towards the discovery that there is indeed satisfaction, nay, joy!, in solving an algebraic equation; expanding students' knowledge of the workings of the universe with the triumvirate of calculus -- sine, cosine and tangent.  In the words of colleague Phil Schwartz, "Eva took no prisoners, and would stand up to anyone she thought was insufficiently aware that mathematics was the very bed-rock of education."  Born in Vienna, Eva came to the United States when she was in her early twenties. She was fluent in German, French and English and her manner and teaching style were imbued with an elegance and generous view of the world. She was ever fair to her students and honored the individuality of each of her pupils. She is also remembered by former colleagues as the master behind the master schedule - sitting with then Principal Ernest Seegers and Dr. Earle Hunter amidst piles of cut up pieces of paper, giving shape to an academic year.  We express heartfelt gratitude for the breadth and depth of service Eva gave to Friends Seminary and are proud to honor her as Faculty Emerita.
