Leading media journalist Soledad O'Brien (mother of Sofia '19, Cecilia '20, Charlie '23 and Jackson '23) facilitated a panel discussion with students in Grades 7-12 about community policing and race relations on Wednesday, April 29 in the Meetinghouse.

NYPD Deputy Chief Terri Tobin, Friends Visual Arts teacher Triton Mobley, student Clarence D. '19  and Timothy Pearson, president of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives - New York Chapter, joined Soledad as panelists. They spoke about the complexities of law enforcement, the damaging ramifications of stop and frisk—especially for young black males—and the media’s role in shaping policy and public opinion.

Soledad also screened clips from her CNN documentary, Black In America: Black and Blue, which some students had viewed and discussed prior to the assembly in class.

“In the media, there’s 100 stories of white people, about 5 stories of black people, about 3 stories of Latinos, and Asians—there’s 1 story—and Native Americans—there’s no coverage at all,” said Soledad. “I think there should be 100 stories for all people. At least.”
