A Day of Discussion

Derald Wing Sue discusses latest book with faculty and staff.
Faculty and staff returned from break eager to discuss three books — Whistling Vivaldi, Case Studies in Diversity and Social Justice Education, and Race Talk and the Conspiracy of Silence — that comprised for its educators the School’s summer common read on diversity and inclusion. On September 3, the beginning of the 2015-2016 school year for Friends’ employees, Derald Wing Sue, author of Race Talk and Professor of Psychology and Education at Columbia University, addressed the full faculty and staff. An expert on racial identity development and social justice, Sue discussed microaggressions in the classroom and workplace, as well as the many obstacles to successful racial dialogue. Following his keynote, Sue facilitated among a subset of employees a discussion on his book, while others broke out into small discussion groups focused on the other two books.
