Friends Announces LS Poet-in-Residence

Friends welcomes Rachel Zucker as our Lower School Poet-in-Residence.
The Lower School Poet-in-Residence program will bring talented artists for an extended stay in our Lower School community during each academic year. In our inaugural year, we will welcome Rachel Zucker as our Poet-in-Residence. A native New Yorker, Rachel has lived in the city for almost her entire life, which has greatly influenced her poetry. Rachel has taught poetry to both adults and children.

In her role as Poet-in-Residence, Rachel will lead and teach our faculty and host an assembly for our Lower School students. During the months of January, February and March, Rachel will work along with teachers in the K-4 classrooms providing lessons in poetry writing, personal reflection and oral recitation. We will culminate in a poetry celebration for all of the Lower School Community on Friday, April 15 at 2 p.m.

“Zucker’s poems read like skin-of-your-teeth escapes from impending disaster.”
-The New Yorker

I am shattering fields of time around me
& experiencing time differently from those I pass
last night I saw my son’s adult self &
in the same moment toddler self this really
happened he was playing “Wish You Were Here”
by Pink Floyd on his electric guitar & feeling it
he’s 11 & in between 2 kinds of time
-Rachel Zucker
