Peer Tutors Reflect on Year of Service

Recently, students in the Academic Center’s Peer Tutor Program gathered to reflect on their year of service. They discussed both the challenges and benefits of teaching other students and best practices for success. Though punctuated with humor, the students’ conversation demonstrated deep thought and significant growth. One tutor explained the importance of preparing before each session to make sure that each session is as productive as it can be. Another tutor described the satisfaction of working with a peer whose teacher recognizes the pupil’s academic growth. Many tutors agreed that their knowledge of their subject area has deepened through their work with tutees. Toward the end of the gathering, tutors shared with each other words of wisdom and encouragement, eventually ending with a reflection on tutoring as service to the school community.

About the Academic Center
Through the Academic Center, students in Grades 7-12 can request peer tutors in any academic subject. Students interested in becoming peer tutors write essays highlighting their academic achievement and commitment to developing their craft as “student-teachers.” Once selected, peer tutors commit to meeting with their tutees weekly and participating in occasional seminars to reflect on pedagogy. The Academic Center’s peer tutoring blog provides tutors with educational articles that help them refine their craft. During the 2014-2015 academic year, the Peer Tutoring Program matched nearly 70 students with tutors.
