Support For Costs Beyond Tuition

Bearing the cost of a transformational education includes expenses beyond tuition. Here at Friends Seminary, we understand this reality and are committed to helping our Friends families offset these expenses. All students, regardless of their economic background, will have complete access to the Friends Seminary experience.

ADMISSIONS

We provide…
  • Application Fee Waivers: for students in placement programs or who demonstrate financial need. Refer questions to the Director of Financial Aid and Affordability.
  • Reduced ECAA Primary Testing Fees: for Grades 2-4 students with qualifying incomes on a first-come, first-served basis. Refer questions to the Director of Financial Aid and Affordability.
  • Reduced ISEE and SSAT Testing Fees: for Grades 5-11 students with qualifying incomes on a first-come, first-served basis. Refer questions to the Director of Financial Aid and Affordability.

ACADEMIC AND SOCIO-EMOTIONAL SUPPORT

We provide…
  • Required Testing and Evaluation: for students at the percent of their financial aid award when they are recommended for support and referred by their Division Head. Refer questions to Divisional Office.
  • Recommended Tutoring and Remediation: for students at the percent of their financial aid award up to $200 per week when they are recommended for support and referred by their Division Head. Refer questions to Divisional Office.
  • Chapman Academic Center: (7:45-4:30) for all students Grades 7-12 to provide faculty assistance, peer tutoring and independent study. Refer questions to the Divisional Office.

PROGRAM SUPPORT

We provide…
  • Books: included with tuition for all Grades K-8 students and free of charge for Grades 9-12 who receive 90% or more of financial aid. We also provide assistance towards academic resources like calculators and Apps required for classes to those receiving 90% or more of financial aid. Refer questions to the Divisional Office
  • iPads: free of charge for all students. Refer questions to Tech Support and Division Heads.
  • Athletic Equipment: like uniforms and required equipment at no charge to all students. Aid is available to students for required equipment beyond uniforms on Varsity and Junior Varsity teams who demonstrate financial need. Refer questions to the Director of Financial Aid and Affordability.
  • Musical Instruments: that can be loaned or rented for the school year on a case-by-case need basis to students with demonstrated financial need. Any unexpected maintenance and tuning are covered at a percentage of financial aid. Refer questions to the Director of Financial Aid and Affordability.

TRANSPORTATION

We provide…
  • Full or Half-Fare MetroCards: for all students residing in NYC depending on age and distance. Refer questions to Divisional Office.
  • NYC Board of Education Provides Free Yellow School Buses: for all Grades K-6 students residing in Lower Manhattan or Upper East Side. Refer questions to Lower School Office.
  • Independent West Side Buses: (AM Only) for students residing on the West Side. Fee required; no discount. Refer questions to the Admissions Office.

MEALS

We provide…
  • Free Breakfast: for All in the Friends community.
  • Lunch: is a required fee for all students Grades K-8. Lunch Plan is an optional fee for all students in the Upper School. Upper School students who receive 50%-90% financial aid receive 25% off the annual cost of the lunch plan. Upper School students who receive more than 90% of financial aid receive 50% off the annual cost of the lunch plan. Lunch tickets are available on an as-needed basis and can be purchased from the Upper School Office and the Business Office. Refer questions to the Business Office.

SCHOOL TRIPS

We provide…
  • Music Trips: students on financial aid receive a discount based on their percent of aid (up to 75%) on the total cost of the trip (transportation, food, fees, lodging included, if applicable). Refer questions to the Director of Financial Aid and Affordability.
  • Athletic Related Travel and Camps: students on financial aid receive a discount based on their percent of aid (up to 75%) on the total cost of the trip (transportation, food, fees, lodging included, if applicable). Refer questions to the Director of Financial Aid and Affordability.
  • Global Education Immersion Trips: support to students on financial aid who have the opportunity to go on one international or domestic immersion experience trip in their career at Friends. We provide a discount to students on financial aid based on their percent of aid (up to 75%) on the total cost of the trip (transportation, food, fees, lodging included) but this aid package is only guaranteed for one global education immersion trip. Students on Financial Aid are welcome to apply to other immersion experience trips, but aid for additional trips can only be offered on a case-by-case basis. Students who do not receive financial aid but demonstrate financial need can also request support for these trips. Refer questions to the Director of Financial Aid and Affordability.
  • School Sponsored Student Activity Trips: students on financial aid receive a discount based on their percent of aid (up to 75%) on the total cost of the trip (transportation, food, fees, lodging included, if applicable). Refer questions to the Director of Financial Aid and Affordability.

COLLEGE PREP

We provide…
  • College Board (SAT) and ACT Fee Assistance and Waivers to students who meet the federal guidelines. Refer questions to College Counseling Office.  
  • Individualized SAT or ACT tutoring at a reduced rate. Zinc Educational Services will offer 15 one-on-one tutoring sessions (90 minutes each) at a reduced rate to Grade 11 students who receive financial aid. Students will receive a further discount (up to 90%) based on their percentage of financial aid. Refer questions to College Counseling Office. 
  • College Tours support to students on financial aid who receive their percent of aid (up to 75%) on the total cost of the trip (transportation, food, fees, lodging included, if applicable). Additional financial aid support is available through the college tour company. Students on financial aid are able to apply to other college tours, but up to 75% aid is only guaranteed for one trip. Aid for additional trips is offered on a case-by-case basis. Refer questions to College Counseling Office. 

SPECIAL EVENTS

We provide…
  • School Fundraiser Tickets: at a discounted rate for families receiving financial aid or with other situations of financial need. Refer questions to the Advancement Office.
  • Friends After Three (F.A.T.) Special Events at a reduced rate for Grade K-8 students on financial aid at their percent of financial aid (up to 75%). Refer questions to Extended Programs Office.  
  • Events Sponsored by Parents Association: at a discounted rate for families receiving financial aid or with other situations of financial need. Refer questions to the Director of Financial Aid and Affordability.

EXTENDED PROGRAMS

We provide…
  • Early Bird Programming: (7:45-8:25 AM) for students Grades K-4. Students receiving up to 90% of financial aid receive a percentage of aid discount (up to 75%) on the total cost. There is no charge for students (a) receiving more than 90% financial aid; (b) who take the Yellow Bus or West Side Bus; (c) whose parents are attending pre-authorized Parents Association meeting. Refer questions to the Extended Programs Office.
  • Friends After Three (F.A.T., 3:10-4:30pm) and Extended Day Programming (4:30-5:30pm) for students Grades K-8. Students receiving up to 90% financial aid receive their percent of tuition aid (up to 75%) on daily fees only; other class fees may apply. For students who receive more than 90% financial aid, the daily fee is waived; other class fees may apply. Refer questions to Extended Programs Office. 
  • Homework Help: for Grade K-4 students. Those on financial aid receive the program free of charge. Refer questions to the Extended Programs Office.
  • Summer Friends: (June Camp) for Grade K-8 students at a percent of aid discount (up to 75%) though some exclusions may apply. Refer questions to the Extended Programs Office.
  • Childcare: during Parent Meetings free of charge for all families with a currently enrolled student.
