Kindergarten - Grade 4

Application Requirements

Applications for the 2020-2021 school year are available online starting Monday, August 26, 2019. Online registrations for Lower School tours open Tuesday, September 3, 2019.

Kindergarten
is the key entry grade in Lower School.

Grades 1-4
are attrition-based gradesHowever unexpected openings may occur, and interested families always are encouraged to submit an application without a fee. Please contact the Admissions Office for the Fee Waiver Code.

Tours are scheduled from late September through early January and are intended for parents applying for the 2020-2021 school year. An application is not required to tour the School. Tours include an information session with the Head of Lower School and the Director of Admissions. To schedule a parent tour, please click REGISTER

Application for Admission
  • Kindergarten | To start the process, submit the Application for Admission form (biographical information) and the non-refundable $75 application fee. Interviews are scheduled via email once this form and the fee have been received.
  • Grades 1-4 | To start the process, submit the Application for Admission form and send a current school report. No fee will be required until an application becomes active. Please contact the Admissions Office for the Fee Waiver Code. Applications will be put on hold, and families will be contacted as openings occur. All supplemental materials can be submitted once an interview is scheduled.
Student and Parent Visit
  • Kindergarten and Grade 1 | Children meet in groups of six with two teachers while parents meet with a member of the Admissions Office.
  • Grades 2-4 | Children spend time in a classroom with students in their current grade followed by a conversation with a member of the Admissions Office. During the visit, parents also meet with a member of the Admissions Office.

Kindergarten and Grade 1 | Friends requires the ISAAGNY Confidential School Report. If your current school does not have access to this form, please contact the Admissions Office.
Grades 2-4 | Current School Transcript required.
  • Standardized Testing is NOT required.
  • Current Teacher Recommendation (Grades 2 through 4 ONLY)
  • Parent Supplement
For processed applications, all application materials must be submitted by January 8, 2020.

Important Information

Application Fee Waivers are available for (1) families of students in placement programs; (2) families who demonstrate financial need (please contact the Director of Financial Aid and Affordability); and (3) families applying for attrition-based grades. Please call the Admissions Office for the Fee Waiver Code.

Age Policy 
Children applying to Kindergarten must be five-years-old by September 1 of the year they begin school. Children applying to Grade 1 must be six-years-old by September 1 of the year they begin school.

Early Notification 
An Early Notification Program is available for Kindergarten ONLY.  This program applies to children of Members of the Religious Society of Friends, current sibling families, and children of current faculty and staff. Please fill out the Early Notification Form to start the process.

Application Follow-Up 
It is each family’s responsibility to ensure that all application materials have been received by Friends Seminary. Ravenna, our electronic application management system, allows families immediate access to the status of their application. No decision can be made by the Admissions Committee until an application is complete.

Kindergarten applications close once interview slots are filled.

Families applying for Grades K-4 after January 8
 should contact the Admissions Office regarding openings.

For students coming to Friends Seminary from other independent schools
, all financial obligations from a student’s previous school must be satisfied before that student can enroll at Friends Seminary.

For parents who do not speak English as a primary language
, we are happy to provide translators for Spanish, French, Mandarin, and Arabic speakers. Please contact the Admissions Office before the scheduled interview so that we can arrange for a translator.

Important Admissions Dates

The 2019-2020 dates are listed below for applications and files completed by January 8, 2020. 
By agreement with the Independent Schools Admissions Association of Greater New York (ISAAGNY), decisions on completed applications will be sent according to the ISAAGNY established dates. If grade openings occur after the established notification dates, admissions decisions will be made once the application process is completed.
 
Grade Entering: Kindergarten
  • Notification Dates (Delivered by e-mail): Friday, February 7
  • Parent Contract Deadline (no later than noon): Friday, February 14

Grade Entering: Grade 1 - Grade 8
  • Notification Dates (Delivered by e-mail): Not before Tuesday, February 4
  • Parent Contract Deadline (no later than noon): Tuesday, February 25

Grade Entering: Grade 9 - Grade 11
  • Notification Dates (Delivered by e-mail): Not before Thursday, February 13
  • Parent Contract Deadline (no later than noon): Thursday, March 12
