Lower School

Kindergarten - Grade 4

For 234 years, Friends Seminary has educated for "a world that ought to be." Despite these challenging times, Friends continues to live its mission by creating new ways to build community and to deliver an inspiring academic program. Applications for the 2021-2022 school year will be available starting August 24, 2020. Stay tuned for more information on our 2021-2022 admissions process.

Kindergarten
is the key entry grade in Lower School.
 
Grades 1-4 are attrition-based grades. Since unexpected openings may occur, interested families are encouraged to submit an application without a fee. Please contact the Admissions Office for the Fee Waiver Code.
 

Lower School Fall/Winter Tours are scheduled from late September through early January and are intended for parents applying for the following school year. An application is not required to tour the School. Tours include an information session with the Head of Lower School and the Director of Admissions. Registration will open in late August.

Application for Admission
  • Kindergarten | To start the process, submit the Application for Admission form (biographical information) and the non-refundable $75 application fee. Interviews are scheduled via email once this form and the fee have been received.
  • Grades 1-4 | To start the process, submit the Application for Admission form and send a current school report. No fee will be required until an application becomes active. Please contact the Admissions Office for the Fee Waiver Code. Applications will be put on hold, and families will be contacted as openings occur. All supplemental materials can be submitted once an interview is scheduled.
Student and Parent Visit
  • Kindergarten and Grade 1 | Children meet in groups of six with two teachers while parents meet with a member of the Admissions Office.
  • Grades 2-4 | Children spend time in a classroom with students in their current grade followed by a conversation with a member of the Admissions Office. During the visit, parents also meet with a member of the Admissions Office.

    • Kindergarten and Grade 1 | Friends requires the ISAAGNY Confidential School Report. If your current school does not have access to this form, please contact the Admissions Office.
    • Grades 2-4 | Current School Transcript required.
  • Parent Supplement
  • Current Teacher Recommendation (Grades 2 through 4 ONLY)
  • Standardized Testing is NOT required.

Important Information

Application Fee Waivers are available for (1) families of students in placement programs, (2) families who demonstrate financial need (please contact the Director of Financial Aid and Affordability), and (3) families applying for attrition-based grades. Please call for the Fee Waiver Code at 646.579.5042.

Age Policy 
Children applying to Kindergarten must be five years old by September 1 of the year they begin school. Children applying to Grade 1 must be six years old by September 1 of the year they begin school.

Early Notification 
An Early Notification Program is available for Kindergarten ONLY. This program applies to children of Members of the Religious Society of Friends, current sibling families, and children of current faculty and staff. Please fill out the Early Notification Form to begin the process.

Application Follow-Up 
It is each family’s responsibility to ensure that all application materials have been received by Friends Seminary. Ravenna, our electronic application management system, allows families immediate access to the status of their application. No decision can be made by the Admissions Committee until an application is complete.

Kindergarten applications close once interview slots are filled.

Families applying for Grades K-4 after January 8
 should contact the Admissions Office regarding openings.

For students coming to Friends Seminary from other independent schools
, all financial obligations from a student’s previous school must be satisfied before that student can enroll at Friends Seminary.

For parents who do not speak English as a primary language
, we are happy to provide translators for Spanish, French, Mandarin, and Arabic speakers. Please contact the Admissions Office before the scheduled interview so that we can arrange for a translator.

Lower School sings the Silent Song

A tradition for over 15 years, "The Silent Song" by Carol Peck is sung every Wednesday to close Lower School's Meeting for Worship. Enjoy this special version performed by students, parents, faculty and staff!





SUMMER BRIDGE AT FRIENDS!

Friends is excited to launch SUMMER BRIDGE – an optional free program for our K-12 students to spark their curiosity and to provide summer joy! From "Reading in a Canoe on the Hudson River" to "Dialogues on Race, Justice and Circle Keeping" to "Kindergarten Meet Your Teacher" to "An Introduction to Isaac Bashevis Singer", Summer Bridge provides 45+ programs to enrich our students’ summer experiences.  To view the program, please click here.
