Application Requirements

At this time, Grade 9 is fully enrolled for 2020-2021. However, unexpected openings may occur before September for Grade 9 and for attrition Grades 10-12. We therefore encourage interested families to submit an application without a fee and email a current school report. Please call our office for the Fee Waiver Code at 646.979.5042. Thank you. 

Grade 9 is the key entry grade in Upper School.

Application for Admission
  • Grade 9 | To start the process, submit the Application for Admission form (biographical information) and the non-refundable $75 application fee. The remaining supplemental forms should be submitted as soon as possible and before January 8, 2020.
  • Grades 10-12 | To start the process, (1) submit the Application for Admission form (biographical information) without a fee, (2) send a current school report, and (3) if taken, submit standardized testing results (ISEE or SSAT). Applications will be put on hold, and families will be contacted as openings occur. No fee will be required until an application becomes active. Please contact the Admissions Office for the Fee Waiver Code. All supplemental materials can be submitted once an interview is scheduled.
Tours and Interviews | For Upper School applicant families, student-led tours and parent and student interviews are scheduled within a single appointment. The Admissions Office will reach out via email to schedule the combined tours/interview once the Application for Admission form and application fee have been received.

  • Current Graded English or History Essay (preferably with teacher comments)
  • Student Interests and Activities List (optional)
NOTE: Since ISEE and SSAT have closed testing operations through April 16, 2020, Friends Seminary will provide its own assessment in lieu of these standardized tests.

Important Information

Application Fee Waivers are available for (1) families of students in placement programs; (2) families who demonstrate financial need (please contact the Director of Financial Aid and Affordability); and (3) families applying for attrition-based grades. Please call the Admissions Office for the Fee Waiver Code. 

Application Follow-Up It is each family’s responsibility to ensure that all application materials have been received by Friends Seminary. Ravenna, our electronic application management system, allows families immediate access to the status of their application. No decision can be made by the Admissions Committee until an application is complete. 

Families applying for Grades 9 through 12 after January 8 should contact the Admissions Office regarding openings. 

For students coming to Friends Seminary from other independent schools, all financial obligations from a student’s previous school must be satisfied before that student can enroll at Friends. 

For parents who do not speak English as a primary language, we are happy to provide translators for Spanish, French, Mandarin, and Arabic speakers. Please contact the Admissions Office before the scheduled interview so that we can arrange for a translator.

Important Admissions Dates

The 2019-2020 dates are listed below for applications and files completed by January 8, 2020. 
By agreement with the Independent Schools Admissions Association of Greater New York (ISAAGNY), decisions on completed applications will be sent according to the ISAAGNY established dates. If grade openings occur after the established notification dates, admissions decisions will be made once the application process is completed.
Grade Entering: Kindergarten
  • Notification Dates (Delivered by e-mail): Friday, February 7, 3:00 PM
  • Parent Contract Deadline (no later than noon): Friday, February 14

Grade Entering: Grade 1 - Grade 8
  • Notification Dates (Delivered by e-mail): Not before Tuesday, February 4
  • Parent Contract Deadline (no later than noon): Tuesday, February 25

Grade Entering: Grade 9 - Grade 11
  • Notification Dates (Delivered by e-mail): Not before Thursday, February 13
  • Parent Contract Deadline (no later than noon): Thursday, March 12
