The Art of Teaching Lecture is the annual event honoring the work of a Friends Seminary Faculty member whose teaching embodies the spirit of the Friends Mission and Strategic Plan. A social reception at 5:30 PM in the Common Room will be followed by a lecture from the honorees and Q & A starting at 6 PM.
A decade ago, Friends Seminary launched a comprehensive Arabic language and culture program — the first of its kind among New York City independent schools. With this pioneering program, the School hoped to lay a foundation to bridge cultures and make powerful connections that would ultimately “help to bring about a world that ought to be.” Today, the Arabic program thrives because of the efforts of the educators who have helped shape and nurture it. Featured in the 2018-2019 Art of Teaching presentation, Anna Swank (former faculty), Nadim Bawalsa, Joseph Sills, and Belal Joundeya will share their experiences and motivations in building this distinctive program. They will look back to the beginning of a nacent program, while also sharing their vision for the its future.
