Students Shine at Summit

Eighth graders presented solutions to global crises

As an extension of the Grade 8 goLEAD service learning curriculum, 12 Friends students attended the 2017 Annual Concern Worldwide Global Youth Summit on March 3 held at Mutual of America in Manhattan. These Eighth Graders received special permission to join an event that primarily serves high school students from eight New York City schools. Through collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking, students presented long-term solutions to challenges surrounding complex emergencies and crises currently taking place in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Afghanistan, Somalia, South Sudan, Haiti, and Syria, just to name a few. A panel of judges, many whom are international aid workers, chose two teams as co-winners of the Summit — one being the Somalia team, primarily comprised of Friends students! Congratulations to students Emilia, Samantha, Willow, Josey, Max, Beatrice, Sam, Willa, Ella, Su, Olivia and Alexander for their participation in this event.
