A Day of Service

Grade 9 Families Volunteer on Governor's Island

On Saturday, September 15, Grade 9 students and parents in F.L.I.N.G. (Freshmen Lead in National Giving). This annual service event provides students and parents an opportunity to bond with others in the grade while volunteering on the 9/11 Day of Service. In 2009, Congress designated 9/11 as a National Day of Service and remembrance. On this solemn anniversary, Americans unite in service in the same remarkable way that so many New Yorkers came together following the attacks.

This year, Grade 9 students and parents partnered with Earth Matter on Governor's Island. Earth Matter seeks to reduce the organic waste misdirected into the garbage stream by encouraging neighbor participation and leadership in composting. Their farm has won national acclaim for its compost learning center and zero-waste initiatives.
