Peace Week 2020 to Explore Climate Justice
It is said that the climate will have a bigger impact on humanity than the internet ever had. If there can be a silver lining to the recent superstorms, wildfires, heatwaves and droughts, it is that a once-seemingly unwilling public is finally taking notice. In these critical times, public discourse on this topic is increasing, yet some say a bit too late. Considering Friends Seminary’s call to peace, equity and justice and the Quaker testimony of stewardship, we feel the most fitting response as a community is to engage in education, dialogue and action toward a sustainable future.
During Peace Week, the School will host David Wallace-Wells, deputy editor and climate columnist for New York Magazine and the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller The Uninhabitable Earth: Life After Warming, which examines the many ways climate change promises to transform the way we live on the planet. David Wallace-Wells’ talk in the historic 15th Street Meetinghouse on Thursday, February 6, (6:30-7:30 PM) will serve as both a travelogue of the near future and a meditation on how that future will look to those living through it. Peace Week curricular and co-curricular extensions will create spaces to explore global climate challenges. Through queries, we will reflect on our role, both individual and collective, in bringing about a just and equitable climate future that marries people and planet, policy and business.
