Whether it’s a zine, a chapter from that graphic novel you’ve been working on, or a good old-fashioned comic book, Nicole will help you bring your vision to life. Learn to combine original ideas with words and images from video games, television and the internet to produce a unique artistic style.

With Jorge Cruz, Character Sculptor

Using special modeling clay, instructors from Miami Beach’s Clay World will help students create figurines, animals, people, monsters and more! All creations built during class can be taken home. You can go to clayworld.org to see for yourself some of the creative projects to come!

Juggling and the Art of Manipulation

Grades 3-4
Taught by professional entertainer and educator Harrison Kramer, “Juggling and Manipulation” is a class for anyone interested in vastly improving their concentration, hand eye-coordination, timing and skill acquisition ability. Students will learn the ancient arts of juggling and manipulation by studying a wide array of skill toys and professional circus props that have inspired curiosity and amazement for many hundreds and even thousands of years.

Tennis with Children’s Athletic Training School

Grades K-4
Be part of this innovative program that allows us to offer tennis instruction right here at Friends! Perfected by veteran tennis professionals and child education specialists, CATS lessons and exercises are carefully tailored to support children’s physical and motor skill development. Children will learn how to swing, volley and use proper footwork. With a focus on fair play and positive attitude, students will play real games each week.

TEKintellect Amazing Machines

Grades K-2
Build exciting mechanized machines from Lego components including motors and remote-controlled infrared activated components. Models include Hummers, dune buggies, airplanes, carousels, windmills, Ferris wheels, elevators and many others. Students will learn the scientific principles underlying these machines, including centrifugal and centripetal forces, power transmission, potential and kinetic energies, torque, inertia and angular momentum. Experience hands-on, multi-sensory, fun-filled experimental learning which helps develop creativity, organization, imagination and teamwork.

We’ll learn about a variety of printing, dying, airbrushing and fiber techniques to design t-shirts with a purpose. We’ll research and decide on the organization of our choice, selling our shirts to raise funds for that mission.

Grades 3-4
Kick off the school year with a spirited drive toward the end zone! Whether our field is the Outer Courtyard or the new Sky Field, “touch-tackle” rules will ensure safety and excitement while we run, block and pass for yards. This is an all-weather class so we’ll sweat it out on hot afternoons, dodging falling sycamore leaves, and tear through cold November puddles. Fun is only a first down day away!

Start with a mess and end up with art! In this workshop, containing a combination of 2D and 3D projects, you will learn how to build creations such as toys, sculptures and life-like models, as well as paint and draw with opaque and transparent mediums including tie-dye! By using multiple materials you’ll discover that there are way more than three dimensions to your creativity!

Super Scientists

Grades K-4
This trimester the Super Scientists will investigate, imagine and create through the exploration of Chemistry! We will put the scientific method to the test as we experiment with liquids to create radical reactions and super substances each week that fizz and foam! We will explore the magical world of bubbles and scientists will engage in challenges such as making the biggest bubble or tallest bubble tower. Science is always full of surprises and we can’t wait to share all of these exciting experiments and more with our SUPER SCIENTISTS!

Students will gain programming and designing skills through independent explorations. Possible projects include constructing Scratch games and animations with scrolling backgrounds and variables, designing fold-up houses for a cutting machine and creating a small community with them, coding geometric designs for embroidery, or creating a light-up costume for Halloween.

One of the safest sports around and a proven workout. FATsters have the opportunity to join the blading craze by learning the moves from an “inline” pro! Basic skating instruction will include striding, turning, stopping, crossovers and much more. Limited enrollment. Skates, pads and helmets required.

BSNY Operation Obstacles

Grades K-2
Join Basketball Stars of New York and bring out your inner Ninja Warrior. Coaches will set up various challenges using physical activities such as walking, climbing, crawling and maintaining balance. Students must cross all of these obstacles to reach the end of the course. The game is not about the end result, but about the fun of facing and conquering the obstacle course. The obstacles will be chosen to help children develop their coordination and other physical skills. This class will give participants an opportunity to learn new techniques and understand more about their physical abilities.

Want an after school program that combines creativity with outdoor physical activity? Or maybe your child is already a parkour enthusiast and wants to hone their skills? Either way our Parkour Adventure series is right for them. Perhaps our most aptly named class, each session is its own Parkour Adventure. We adventure out of Friends School and use class time as an active exploration of the surrounding environment. The series starts with a stronger emphasis on learning and developing fundamental movement skills and build into our students discovering and creating their own possibilities for creative movement and creating runs and challenges for themselves and others. Class will end at 5 PM.

Join us as we explore the wild and wondrous worlds of our favorite children’s author! We rehearse a fully staged production of Roald Dahl's The Witches and delve into acting technique, comedic timing and character development. Song and spoken-word poetry also by Dahl will augment our rehearsal process. Class culminates in a final performance in February. Two Trimester commitment. Class will end at 5 PM.

With Movement Creative

Parkour Fundamentals is perfect whether you are trying parkour for the first time or if you want to continue to develop your movement skills. This class is all about developing kids’ abilities to safely practice parkour by themselves or with friends. We cover an entire skill arc each class. We teach risk assessment and technique while working to improve balance, coordination, control and awareness through jumping, crawling, climbing, rolling and vaulting. Each class will take a different fundamental movement skill through a variety of drills, challenges, activities and games. Class will end at 5 PM.

Join some of your favorite superheroes for an action-packed yoga class! We’ll go through important training to strengthen our bodies. Acro Yoga combines acrobatics with yoga to bend, stretch, twist, stack and fly! Kids will learn how to safely “fly” each other and support each other through strength, focus, connection and communication. Partner and group acrobatics and being “flown” by the instructors will be practiced in each class. Kids will build confidence and experience full body strengthening through the poses. This fun experience is for anyone who likes to play!

Open to players of all levels. Beginners will be introduced to the fundamentals of the game, including basic strategy and tactics. By learning to think like a magician, students will discover the skills that make up every conjuror's toolbox such as sleight of hand, psychology, misdirection, secret codes, mental systems and showmanship. Through independent projects, students will gain programming and designing skills. Possibilities include using learning the basics of a text based language such as Python, coding the Microbit, and taking advantage of the new features of Scratch 3.0. As they make discoveries, participants will be encouraged to revise and debug their own code and designs and collaborate with their peers. For this F.A.T. activity, a strong understanding of fundamental programming concepts is required.

Shakespeare Players: Macbeth | Part 1

Grades 6-7

With Child's Play NY

When a coven of witches counsel Macbeth, he sets off on a destructive and tragic quest for power. Along the way, queens go mad, kings become ghosts, forests move and daggers float. A thrilling exploration of ambition, fate and magic. In our two-trimester Shakespeare Players class, young people become confident with Shakespeare’s world, language and characters as they learn how to interpret a role with technique and courage. Classically trained professional actors assist the players in their physical, vocal and emotional transformations. Part 2 will be available in the second trimester. Class culminates in a final performance in February.

Flowers and gardens have been the subject matter of many great artists throughout history. In this studio art class we will look at Van Gogh’s famous sunflowers, Georgia O’Keefe’s close-ups of flowers and Monet’s impressionist gardens as inspiration to create our own paintings and pastel drawings. Students will get to practice still-life drawings and paintings, as well as do sketches from actual gardens in NYC.

Registrations are due August 27, 2018. Any registrations received after August 27 will be processed only if space remains, and a Late Registration Fee of $25 will be assessed.
If payment in full is not received prior to the start of the trimester a $25 late fee will be added to your account.
Phone registrations will not be accepted.
For your convenience we now accept credit cards: checks are no longer valid.
Tuition aid is available to those who receive aid for the academic year.
After September 25, refunds or credits will not be given for changes to enrollment status.
Classes may be canceled due to insufficient enrollment.

Late Pick-up

If a child is picked up late more than twice in a trimester, the school has the right to refuse to accept that child in the Extended Day Program.

Drop-in Info

Drop-ins are available for Early Bird, F.A.T. Activities and Extended Day.
Please send a note to your child’s teacher indicating a change in dismissal and that they will be dropping in to afterschool.
In addition to the dismissal note please fill out our drop-in request form by logging into Campium here.
This form must be filled out by 1:30 PM on the day of your drop-in. We will invoice you with the cost of the class, payment is expected within 7 days of billing. When your child arrives at FAT, we will give them the choices of that days available classes.
