Computer Science Education Week

In celebration of Computer Science Education Week, Friends Seminary's Technology Department will host events for students in each divsion.
In celebration of Computer Science Education Week, Friends Seminary's Technology Department will host events for students in each divsion.

Lower School students will learn to program games as part of the national Hour of Code, which challenges students across the country to spend at least one hour working on computer science. Check out the LS Technology Page for more details.

In the Middle School, Grade 7 and 8 students also will participate in the Hour of Code with lessons in basic Javascript during their weekly community period.  Javascript is a powerful programming language often used for web-based games and applications.

The Upper School has invited a few computer programming professionals for lunchtime discussions. Students will have the opportunity to ask questions about jobs, companies, career paths and college experiences related to computer science. The full schedule is below.

Monday, 12/9: 5th Period
Noam Wolf, a software developer and lead manager at Google. He has both a BA and an MA from Queen's College. 

 
Wednesday 12/11: 6th Period 
Alicia Bozyk, software engineer at Rent the Runway, a fashion startup. She has a BS in Computer Engineering from Columbia. 
 
Isabel Barrera, junior software engineer at Rent the Runway. She has a BS in Biochemistry from Queen's University.

 
Thursday, 12/12 5th Period
Dan Shiffman, author of Learning Processing (the text we use in Intro to Programming) and professor at NYU's ITP program. He has a BA in Philosophy from Yale and an MA from ITP at NYU. 

 
Friday, 12/13 6th Period
Andrew Glenn, VP of core systems at Betterment, a financial startup. Andrew has also held positions as VP of engineering at Rent the Runway, CTO at Group Commerce, engineering manager at Google, and engineering director at DoubleClick. He has a BS and an MS in Computer Science from MIT.
