On February 6, the second annual Title IX celebration at Friends boosted metabolisms, confidence and community among Middle and Upper School girls in the Gym.
On February 6, the second annual Title IX Celebration at Friends boosted metabolisms, confidence and community among Middle and Upper School girls in the Gym. A current senior, who once struggled with body image, started the event last year to share the positive impact fitness has had on her own life. Fitness expert and former WNBA player, Holly Rilinger, led students in a 40-minute aerobic class disguised as a dance party. Popular dance tunes blasted through the Gym as Holly shouted encouraging words to the female participants.

Title IX is a piece of legislation passed in 1972 that made it mandatory for women’s sports to receive the same amount of funding as men’s sports in all schools and universities. Today, this law regulates equality in education for all students. Members of the SEAK student organization gave a brief history of Title IX. They also spoke about the SEAK foundation, a nonprofit that encourages women to embrace who they are by building confidence through fitness. After the "fitness party" portion of the event, participants broke off into tennis, basketball, yoga and volleyball workshops.
