"We prepare students to engage in the world that is and to help bring about a world that ought to be."

Lucas Miller '84 Talks about Law Enforcement at an Upper School Assembly

On November 13, Lucas Miller '84 spoke to students from Grades 7 to 12 about his experience in the New York City Police Department.

After graduating from Friends Seminary, Lucas attended Wesleyan University before entering the police academy. "We all have our forms of rebellion," he responded when asked what his parents thought of the decision.

His career took him around the city—first on patrol, and then undercover in the Narcotics Division. He worked his way up to detective sergeant and "second whip" in Bronx Homicide before requesting a transfer to Manhattan, "where murder isn't so common" as he put it. He is currently a lieutenant and detective squad commander in the 13th Precinct, which serves the neighborhood around Friends. Lucas also has written articles that have appeared in Slate and the New York Times.

In addition to telling stories about his most interesting cases, Lucas answered questions about the NYPD and offered some expected—but important—advice to his young audience. "Under no circumstances do you have a reason to play with guns," he said. "There's nothing more heartbreaking than telling a parent that his or her child died because of stupid decisions."
