"We prepare students to engage in the world that is and to help bring about a world that ought to be."

Science Teacher Fred Schubert's paper on the oxidation of iron was recently published in the Journal of Chemical Education. The paper, The Oxidation of Iron: Experiment, Simulation, and Analysis in Introductory Chemistry, outlines a study of the rusting of steel wool. Fred writes: "It is carried out in a simple way, so that beginning chemistry students can grasp what is happening. We don't look closely at the rust formed, but rather we carefully follow the amount of oxygen that is consumed during the process. While the rusting takes place, we carry out a simulation of the same reaction using marbles to represent oxygen in air and tape to stand for the steel wool. Watching the steel wool rust takes a week and is a passive activity. The simulation work, on the other hand, is a lively exercise, carried out by small groups, where a large sample of marbles is repeatedly shaken in a bag and poured in a box. It is carried out in one lab period. Students enjoy the active nature of the work."  Fred currently teaches History of Science and Origin of Knowledge at Friends.
