Health and Wellness

Our Health and Wellness program aims to prepare our students to make well informed choices that support their personal health and wellbeing as well as advocate for the health and wellbeing for the community at large.  We will address our students physical health, mental health, sexual development, social relationships, and personal identity while promoting the values of:

  • Personal Agency
  • Resiliency
  • Social Justice
  • Equity
  • Empathy
  • Cultural Awareness
  • Health & Wellness-6

In the Sixth Grade the focus of this course is on topics related to the social, physical and emotional aspects of puberty and pre-adolescence. Personal growth and social skills are developed through discussions, group work and projects aimed at exploring self-esteem, negotiating relationships with friends and family, body images and decision-making.
  • Health & Wellness-8

Topics include birth control, HIV/AIDS, sexual abuse-harassment-rape, STDs, homosexuality and heterosexuality, questions on sex and autonomy, condom use, and gender relations. Students ask anonymous questions, read related texts, and do independent research. The course is designed to give students information so they can make knowledgeable choices.

Students have to project themselves into the future and imagine what they would do when they get older. They must make decisions about situations in which they are not currently involved. They learn to empathize and sympathize by listening to others and affirming what their classmates have to say. They also have to formulate action plans based on hypothetical situations.

Friends Seminary actively promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism in all its programs and operations, including admissions, financial aid, hiring, and all facets of the educational experience.
