Mathematics

The Lower School mathematics program blends the development and understanding of conceptual skills, mastery of computational facts, and promotion of problem solving strategies and logical thinking. This is done through the use of concrete manipulative materials like pattern blocks, multi-link cubes and base-10 blocks, along with cooperative games and activities that enhance our students’ ability to reason, generalize patterns and develop appropriate strategies.

In addition, mathematical terms are used to create a common language for students and teachers. The curriculum is sequential and includes developmentally appropriate approaches to the study of number, pattern, measurement, geometry, data collection and analysis, statistics and probability, and critical thinking. Developing a strong number sense and the ability to articulate mathematical thinking orally and in writing are also stressed.

Finally, interdisciplinary connections are continuously made to link mathematics to art, music, science, literature and social studies. The flexibility of our Mathematics program allows teachers to adapt instruction to the abilities and interests of their students.
