Examining African Diaspora

Tyler '19 and Quinn '21 Selected as Schomburg Scholar
After a competitive application process, Tyler '19 and Quinn '21 have been selected to be members of the Schomburg Junior Scholars Program, sponsored by the New York Public Library. In its sixteenth year, the program guides a group of NYC students, ages 11-18, through inquiry- and project-based activities to learn about black American history and the global black experience. Along with their peers, Tyler and Quinn will attend college-style lectures and presentations, engage in dialogue with adult scholars, participate in guided peer group discussions and activities, generate individual research projects and portfolios, and create collaborative media and arts projects that grow from their intensive study based on the Schomburg’s vast collections, exhibitions and educational resources. The Scholars will meet every Saturday during the school year.

By highlighting the important contributions that African-Americans have made to U.S. history and culture, the program makes an important impression on participants and instills a deeper understanding about their heritage and the important role they play as citizens. The Junior Scholars Program is unique in that it is one of the only opportunities middle and high school-aged students in the New York area have to engage in structured, in-depth learning about black history.

The Schomburg Center is a world-renowned repository of sources on every facet of the African diasporic experience, with extensive holdings including numerous unique manuscript and archival collections as well as a comprehensive range of publications, photographs, films, audio recordings and visual art.
