Visual Arts

The Lower School Art/Shop program is a sequentially developed, skills-oriented program with a comprehensive curriculum that includes drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, construction, woodworking and textile work. It encourages imaginative thinking and personal expression as well as the development of an aesthetic sense. Discovery and inquiry are fundamental aspects of the program, and the skills, techniques, vocabulary and concepts explored in the art studios support and enrich student learning in the classroom.

Kindergarten students attend Shop for two periods within the eight-day schedule and experience both a visual art and three dimensional curriculum for the full year with one teacher. Students in Grades 1-4 attend Art and Shop for three periods in our eight-day schedule, transitioning in half groups at mid-year. The Lower School celebrates its students with an end of the year art show.
