"We prepare students to engage in the world that is and to help bring about a world that ought to be."

Friends Featured in The New York Times

Our community, our school, and our important work are featured in The New York Times. The lengthy story, "At New York Private Schools, Challenging White Privilege From the Inside," paints an honest and intimate portrait of our School and informs the world that we, at Friends, are tackling difficult and challenging subject matter head-on in a manner that is highly needed in today's world.

Dear Friends,

Our community, our school, and our important work are featured in The New York Times (published online on February 20 and in the print edition on February 22).

The lengthy story, "At New York Private Schools, Challenging White Privilege From the Inside," paints an honest and intimate portrait of our School and informs the world that we, at Friends, are tackling difficult and challenging subject matter head-on in a manner that is highly needed in today's world.

As you'll read in the story, the Times reporter and photographer attended our Day of Concern on January 21, a day organized through collaboration from the Service Learning and Diversity programs led by a team of educators and student leaders. I want to sincerely thank all who helped make Day of Concern a success. I also want to thank the community for welcoming the reporter and photographer into our community during a time of sensitive communal exploration and self-examination.

After reading the story, please take a moment to re-read the last line of our mission statement:

"Guided by the ideals of integrity, peace, equality and simplicity, and by our commitment to diversity, we do more than prepare students for the world that is: we help them bring about the world that ought to be."

While it's important that our work is being showcased by The New York Times, I am most proud when our mission comes to life through the work of our incredible community members — students, faculty and staff. This story gives the world outside of 16th Street a glimpse into daily life at Friend's where our Quaker values sustain us each and every day.

All best,

Bo Lauder
