Charitable Lead Trust (CLT)
If you decide to establish a CLT, annual payments are made to Friends Seminary for a fixed period of time, typically between 10 and 20 years. When the CLT terminates, the remaining principal is paid to your heirs. The amount and terms of the payments to Friends can be structured to reduce or eliminate taxes when the appreciated principal is transferred to your heirs. A CLT enables you to:
- Build a strong future for Friends
- Leave your heirs a larger estate than might otherwise be possible
Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT)
The CRT is structured so that you or another named individual receives annual payments for a fixed period of time. When the CRT terminates, the remainder of the Trust is transferred to Friends Seminary, as a qualified charity. It is essentially the inverse of a CLT. A CRT enables you to:
- Build a strong future for Friends
- Receive income for life for you or your named beneficiaries
- Benefit from gift and estate tax savings.

I believe that education, other than faith in God, is the single most important way to shape any life. Over the years, I have always supported Friends Seminary, which has done so much to shape mine. As a kindergarten and first grade teacher living in Vermont, I was never particularly wealthy. Nevertheless, I always tried to send a little something to Friends.
An unexpected inheritance in 1984 became my opportunity to do more. I set up a charitable trust which will support, after my death, the three institutions that shaped my life, one of which is Friends Seminary. As I have watched this trust grow, it has given me great joy to know that I will continue to shape the lives of others."
